Education Nation and The Journey to Acquiring Knowledge
The society today faces a variety of challenges that hinder growth and development of individuals and the nation as a whole. These challenges affect various aspects of our lives and they may to a big extent lead to demoralization and destruction of the dignity of our character.
The lack of some aspects in our lives such as education may lead to the ability of an individual to achieve his/her full potential. I have lived a life that I have always yearned to lend a helping hand in support of the less fortunate in the community, especially when it comes to ensuring that a certain individual, be it a child or a mature person who is seeking to advance in education levels gets the chance to do that by all means.
This is because I grew up in a very humble background whereby our neighbors and close friends were all dependents of public mercy expressed towards them. I grew up in literally a rural slum whereby even the most basic human needs were a big challenge in terms of provision by our guardians. Luckily, we were only two, I and my sister.
The closest learning center to our small village was miles away, and the journey to seek knowledge would start early in the morning before dawn whereby we could go across the river and through a small forest, by foot, and arrive at our learning center after three hours. The tutors were all volunteers from a certain NGO that had offered to save us from the adverse illiteracy levels that had struck our small village. And through our effort, hustle and tussle, we made it through our elementary level and secured a place in high school, again and obviously through sponsorship. Our lives changed for good.
It Takes Your Own Personal Initiative to Lead a Purposeful Life
It is for this reason that I embarked on a serious mission of promoting education that started with my small village and later spread to the neighboring villages. The programme started out of sheer need to ensure that another child or children do not entirely go through the kind of difficulties that I went through in my younger years of seeking brains.
I started with my own resources that I had garnered over the years and constructed a small but permanent building with the idea of it housing a library. The resources that I had were only enough to complete the construction, but I was determined to equip the library by all means. I started a series of lobbying initiatives, seeking donations and selling the idea to the county education office and explained the need to have at least one or two satellite libraries in the rural areas where learning centers posed a big challenge in terms of accessing them.
I also approached the nearby business people and companies for donations of either books or cash to aid in equipping the library. My efforts bore admirable success as the response was huge, from the business people, the government, established groups and societies and several other parties.
Within no time, the library was fully equipped with materials and more resources still flowing in from various well wishers. It is then that I decided not to be selfish to hold them to my village alone. I therefore set forth to establish two more libraries in the neighboring villages. To my astonishment, the library centers that I had established have since grown to be learning centers courtesy of community initiatives and county government funding. They are now fully operational elementary schools offering quality education to pupils without having them to undergo so much strain in acquiring the same.
Education Is Very Necessary And Inevitable for a Productive Life
As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” And indeed, being educated does exactly that as evidenced by the villages inspired by my initiative of bringing knowledge closer to the people. The initiative also became an eye opener to other individuals and communities across the county and across the nation.
It is crucial to have an educated society as education forms the platform through which any kind of development can be achieved, be it economic, technological, social or political kind of development. The world is changing at an alarming rate and it is changing towards a great need of an informed society. It is literally impossible, especially nowadays to make any progressive development without education.
The world has become so much reliant on information flow that cannot be achieved without education. Government institutions and several other institutions need information in order to provide reliable services to people. Maya Angelou once said, “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” It is therefore a responsibility of each and everyone to do what they can to make the world a better place for the generations to come. I especially recognize and applaud those individuals who have made it possible for the world to learn and access education materials through the internet.
Technological advancement has led to the creation of e-libraries and e-books which offer knowledge and information from the comfort of your home. I feel I did my part in changing a life of an individual somewhere, have you?
